Escalation to World War II

During the period known as the interwar period, which took place between the First and Second World War (1919-1939) many countries suffered a period of serious shift in their orders. The changes that happened led to the Second World War and ignited the rivalry between two participants of the war, US and USSR. First, there was the period of great success for the American side, as they had not lost that much money their economy was booming in a period of time known as the "roaring twenties". Other countries that participated did not have a very nice recovery from the war, as their countries had been devastated from the war, to name two main victims, France and Germany. These two countries, which were next to each other, were sharing the misery that their people felt, although the situation in Germany was by far the worst. Germany was in a tunnel that did not seem to have an exit; the situation was horrible and only one miracle could save them, this miracle was Adolf Hitler. This ruthless fascist politician and war veteran had emerged from the political obscurity to attain power in a period less than 20 years. His ideal of nationalism and knowledge of media tools, the use of propaganda helped him gain the hearts of the German people, creating the Nazi Germany, the igniter of WWII.

Other country that had used fascism to rise from its crisis was Italy, even before than Germany. The Italian people had found in Benito Mussolini the perfect leader, a ruthless dictator, which apart from his secret police and mass purges lowered unemployment. He was a brilliant man, who was a great strategist and used his knowledge to get powerful allies such as the Catholic Church with the Lateran Treaty and Germany, led by his admirer and Fascist leader Adolf Hitler.

Surprisingly enough, every totalitarian ruler got their power from scratch; for instance, Mussolini and his Blackshirts seized power with his several marches. These countries had risen from the economic chaos, mainly Germany that rose from being the greatly affected country, which was in a huge debt to being one of the most powerful world powers in a short period. There were other countries, which had put under a totalitarian government and their respective dictators, the Soviet Union, Spain and China. The latter country began its totalitarian government after the interwar period, where Mao Zedong had seized power.

Francisco Franco, a general who had first sought the liberation of his people at the nationalist side. Franco had to use a totalitarian government, having a keen eye for the media, controlling it fully. He also did many purges just as Hitler and Stalin against the men who decided to have elections or disobeyed his curfews. However, Franco was intelligent and knew how to act to survive, making alliances first with US, then Hitler, and then US again.

Every ruler was very intelligent in a specific thing; Stalin was intelligent at remaining in power and raising his country’s economy by quite a lot. Stalin had also had his share in the military, he was a participant with the Bolsheviks, and he then got the power after the death of Lenin and the "mysterious disappearance" of fellow Bolshevik Leon Trotsky. Furthermore, Stalin, purges and crimes apart was a smart man, with his five-year plans he had achieved a great economic boost in economy. At the end, all these countries and their rulers were similar in the sense that they had a great plan; they just took it too far and their power slowly consumed them.

With this said, the tactics implied by the several leaders could be applied to another countries, since they were in similar conditions. For example, Hitler’s Nazi strategy could have perfectly worked in the United States. There were many sympathizers for the Nazi cause in the US, some examples are Gerald Ford and William Randolph Hurst.

Actually, the Nazi strategy would have worked even better at US, where there was no crisis, Hitler could have boosted the country’s nationalism, used propaganda, establish his youth programs, it could have all worked. These strategies were actually used by the American government itself during WWII, not the youth programs, but they indeed had the most popular place to be or dedicate yourself to-the army. It was all in a similar condition and therefore Hitler’s strategy would have easily worked on America, and who knows, even the fate of the war may have changed. Further, there was quite the scientific movement in Germany; it was a progressing country, just like the US, where it was constantly trying to improve them. In my opinion, this scenario could work out just fine, the two countries were similar and one specific thing they had in similar was the Aryan way of life. Germany under Hitler’s Nazi strategy had openly declared itself as following the greatness of the Aryan empire; US had not done that, but believed in that in some way. America has always searched for the supremacy of the American continent, always the nationalism through the roof and a sense of greater calling in life; some examples of this are the Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny. The switch would have worked indeed, in two countries that had been born again and looked for progress; Germany and United States, Hitler and FDR; it would have worked.

Prezi Reflection

Last week the class had as an assignment to try out a Powerpoint hybrid thing called Prezi. Basically, Prezi is a giant canvas version of Powerpoint, quite innovative and new for a lifelong Powerpoint user. Mr. Mark classified this project as being a "Sandbox experience", just like some videogames in which the main thing you do is experiment. Prezi came along as being quite a good program, newer than Powerpoint and more free or easy to use. One thing I liked over Powerpoint was the fact that you could actually work everywhere, no need to change slides. Also, the preset animation was pretty well done and easy to work with. However, I must say that I would prefer Powerpoint a thousand times over Prezi. Prezi had one specific issue which I disliked a lot, you really can't present without adding the animation, and that reduces your work style to a slow-pacing one, not good. Personally, I like Powerpoint because I am so used to it, and its black and white inspiration, not as interesting as Prezi, but far better in the utility sense.

So, the big discussion is why should I prefer Powerpoint over Prezi, the answer is easy, I am used to it, I like it better. On a further note, I like the style of a Powerpoint presentation, simple, industrial, and straightforward. I personally find that Prezi is a little less formal, trying to hard to impress the users. My opinion on a sideshow presentation is that it should be easy to follow, but not as slow pacing as Prezi. I like that Prezi tries to give an alternative for the preset option Powerpoint, different is always good. I really liked Prezi, however I would never PERSONALLY choose to use it for school work, at least not with presentations, I like my presentations to be informative, not that boring and fast. I have used the whole Microsoft Office package ever since I have memory, I am used to, like and simply love complicating my life, making slides, manually add convex yet lame animations, I like that. It just might be nostalgia but I prefer Powerpoint. In conclusion, I prefer Powerpoint over Prezi, I would use Powerpoint for presentations, but still experiment sometime with Prezi, it is always good to try something new...that doesn't actually harm you.

And the Winner is Powerpoint!!! I have to admit it was a pretty one-sided decision...

Finished PSA

Just yesterday I have finished with the help of my partner, Taku, our PSA. I would have to say that this activity was quite fun, at some parts. I wasn't really happy with the finished product because the quality was quite affected upon putting it into a windows movie project. Also, we couldn't put any transitions into the video, or credits, making the video quite bland for my taste. I am happy with the message of it, I think that a final serious tone was achieved. The message about marijuana being an addictive and therefore dangerous drug was achieved, I felt that this really was clear. Furthermore, the videos of my classmates were quite good actually. The work progress was quite reduced, shooting was separated into three different days. Also, these last two weeks were filled with pressure since we have had lots of work and exams. Finally, I would hope for a second chance to do this activity.

With this said, I would like to make some corrections to my work, as it was far from perfect. First of all, the video quality was horrible, I would like to change that. The resolution was horrible changed upon the format change from .mov to .avi, and so I hope for some more time to fix that issue. Actually, I could consider reshooting the whole thing, with some more time and on another occasion of course. Second, I would love to put in some more transitions as well as some credits, even subtitles. The trouble with the lack there off the last things was that windows movie maker didn't allow us to actually put in those details. I would have loved to put in those details as it would boost our video to a whole new level, from bad to good. Third, I would like to include some sort of more scientific approach to the addictive drug. This last change actually would take some time to actually put together, actually I am not really sure about it. Having a more scientific approach to a drug might actually loose the attention of the audience, bore them. In the end, I was generally happy with the video, and I would make this activity again, in another time that is.

I have watched all the other videos from the class, and my favorite, the best of the best was the Internet Safety PSA. I felt that this PSA was really complete, great quality, awesome acting, attractive and informative. What I liked about this PSA is that it was funny and yet it was informative. I loved the fact that it is so true, stuff like the internet scams depicted in the video do happen. Sometimes approaching such a serious subject in a humorous manner does not work, but in this case it worked perfectly. I would like to make a PSA like that, cool, funny and yet interesting. In the end, I would like to send congrats to the makers, Eduardo, Sebastian and Rodrigo, which made the best video of the class.

Public Service Announcements (PSA)

Today, we have renewed the subject of making commercials, this time we are doing something really similar, PSA'S or Public Service Announcement. It comes to my understanding that a PSA is a longer version of a commercial but with a subject directed at an audience not to promote a product but to teach or show. In this case, you don't actually promote a product, organization or anything, you are simply stating like a problem(drinking, smoking, obesity). It is similar to a commercial in the sense that it is usually broadcast or transmitted between a show or program and it is short. A PSA is usually longer, and it usually consists of making the people aware of a very serious problem or issue, and with it the goal is to make people conscious about an issue not buy something. I expect this activity to be a very fun activity to do and I hope I can actually make the people more aware of something bad and not just joke around.

Since this activity has to be done in groups I have seriously considered with who I should work with. First of all, I would like to work with Taku, because I think working with him should be very interesting. I also think that Taku can have some very interesting ideas of how to execute the PSA as well as making it appealing towards the audience. Basically, Taku will make the PSA an interesting and appealing project that has a chance of teaching the people a lesson. Second, the next candidate is Raul. I think that Raul can be the star in the PSA, since I lack of any acting skill whatsoever. Also, Raul lives very near to my house and so we can have more time to input more quality and hopefully make the PSA better. So, Raul would be a great partner because he can work for a prolonged amount of time and he can make the PSA quite good. Finally, my final candidate is Sebastian. I know Sebastian can work great in a PSA if he knows that his grade is dependent upon it, and so he really would need to work. Also, the main thing is that Sebastian is really funny and can make a funny PSA, perhaps I would interfere in his funniness, so that it actually teaches something.

Potential PSA'S:
1. Obesity.
2. Drinking.
3. Driving under the influence of alcohol.
4. Addiction to drugs.
5. Compulsive Eating
6. Smoking.
7. Bullying.

Basically, the most appealing PSA's are Obesity, Drinking and Bullying. First of all, Obesity is a serious issue in Mexico, we are one of the fattest countries in the world. I think that Obesity specifically should be dealt with a serious approach, because Obesity is so serious that making a funny PSA will probably hurt someone's feelings. I think that we should use facts of Obesity, concrete information and some predictions like for the year 2015 Mexico's population is expected to be this obese and so...Second, Drinking is a serious issue better tackled with a very funny approach. I personally think that if drinking ads don't work if serious, perhaps a funny drinking commercial should work just fine. My idea is to put a car with a drunk driver and drunk passengers as well, only for luck they don't get hurt and we can say... this is just fiction, but in real life most car crashes end with a tragedy, last year itself more than.....amount of people died. Finally, I would make the Bullying commercial a very serious one. It would be about a tall boy hitting a small one and the small one going to his house and crying. The add will then have a segment in which the public speaker tells the facts about bullying in Mexico and so...

Super Bowl and Classmates Commercials

This last Sunday, one of the biggest events of the year happened, the Superbowl, and with it a barrage of various ads. My third favorite commercial is the Captain America movie trailer. This ad in my opinion was one of the best ads, because it is quick, concise and I simply love a good comic movie brought to life. Also, my second favorite Superbowl commercial was the Volkswagen Darth Vader commercial. In my opinion, this is the second best ad for simply being funny, it is cool, I love Star Wars and the force use happened to make a great joke, this commercial was simply executed perfectly. My favorite commercial was the Eminem Chrysler Commercial. This Commercial is my favorite commercial because one ad with no relation to video games or Star Wars has ever captured my attention like this. This video shows you a bold message which is delivered straightforward in to minutes. Finally, many companies waste their money even on a 30' second or a minute ad, this video does so much with two minutes, it is simply jaw dropping.

Simply Jaw-Dropping

Needless to say, not all the Superbowl commercials were good, one specifically which I disliked was the Hyundai Elantra commercial. In my opinion, having an incredibly drugged up video like this just doesn't relate to the car. I have to say, Jeff Bridge's voice over was cool, but I just can't imagine him as a shrink, it doesn't fit. Also, when you realize that the Elantra is a compact car, you kind of loose interest..no I was just joking, it is only that the video is too funky. Then, there is the time factor involved, one minute is way too long at least for the content, they should've made the ad a lot shorter, more like 30 seconds. Also, one big detail that this ad misses at delivering at was at promoting a car, you have to much going on on the screen. So, If I made a car ad which isn't delivering a deep message such as the Eminem ad, I would just make it about the car, nothing else. Finally, I would make a 30 second ad, showing the car, its features and just convincing the potential buyer, not freaking him out.

With the Super Bowl on mind as well as the super budgets for a minute or 30 second ad, experimented by doing our own commercials promoting a product. The project turned out to be quite fruitful because we could see the commercials with another point of view, 86 k for second is a lot of money and on some commercials like the Elantra, it was just thrown to the trash. One ad that stood out in my opinion was Taku's Pringle's commercial. What really interested me from this ad was how a commercial can deliver the message "eat Pringles" without saying a single word. This commercial is short and sweet, it is funny and it involves the product that it is promoting. Sometimes, we loose the goal of a commercial which is (for a product) to buy that product because the ad has convinced us to buy it. The music is really cool and the pace is fast, and it is just fun to see what you can do with three crushed down chips. Finally, I praise Taku's commercial because he didn't need a single word to be spoken to say "eat Pringles" and actually make me hungry, congrats to you Taku.

Effective Commercial

Today and yesterday we watched a couple of commercials of a variety of subjects. The commercials ranged from how funny is not knowing a language, to how distorted our perception of beauty really is. I liked most of these ads, but loved the Dove evolution and Carlton Draught beer ad. The Dove commercial really had a great impact on me, even though I really did know about our distorted view of beauty it is amazing to see it in action. It is the progression from reality into a gruesome fiction that really bumped me out. This ad really tells you what the media has become these days, creating a perfection which can never be achieved, so real and so sad at the same time. The Carlton Draught ad was quite the awesome ad, it was really epic in the whole sense of the word. I really laughed throughout the commercial, and the crude humor that is presented with the combination of such a musical classic composition. This commercial was intended to be funny and it hit exactly into the spot, I really liked this rather different beer commercial.

I have heard the bad news that we have some project, and the project is creating our own commercial. I think it will be fun, I was just kidding in the bad news thing, it is always fun to do something new. I plan to use a comic or funny approach towards my ad, since I seriously cannot deliver the deep emotional approach of the Dove ads. I don't know what to expect yet about the project, but I can only hope that we have the appropriate time to complete the project. This kind of projects really test my ability to demonstrate that I CANNOT ACT, to which hopefully there wouldn't be no more acting projects. I can only wait for the project to be assigned the next week or so, and hopefully the knowledge acquired from watching the commercial will come handy.

I really liked this ad, it is so deep and it has to create some consciousness, I mean If you don't change your smoking habits even with the video, you are a true addict.

Bay in a Day

Jorge Bay in a Day from mistermark on Vimeo.

On my Bay in a Day video I have taken the chronological approach. I have dedicated myself to making the video on a 24 hour scale, from the morning until the night. My theme is time, which can be reflected upon the progression of visual light, up until utter darkness on the city of Puerto Vallarta. I have accomplished this by adding several photos from different places or keypoints on Puerto Vallarta. I also considered other themes for my video, like a more civilian approach to Puerto Vallarta, what do they do, and where; I also considered making my video about only a quick journey through Vallarta as if touring by car. Although I did take some photos out of my car, many of the photos I took were taken on foot, which really got me tired.

The activity did come out to be a truly fun one. The process however, was complicated and quite the bumpy road. I first of all took all the photos throughout a period of three days on a long weekend, going all around the city. After that, I selected my song and decided for the theme. At last, I used Movie Maker to put my whole video together, from the photos, videos, music and at last, animations and transitions. Probably one of the issues that I encountered was the timing on the images and transitions, since transitions really mess up timing on your pre-timed photos. So, I had to personally had to deal with this issue by changing the preset time on every single transitions and simply put them all again. Today, I exported the video file and I am practically done with this, rather long activity.

One Day on Earth

I did like the second video, the first video was way too viral in my opinion. The First video had a lot of media, but still it was a good video, not too good though. The second video, even though it was a trailer was a professional style exhibit of visual media, the first video was a total mess of images with a weird song. The second video has a finer perspective of what is a life on Earth, it captures the eyes far easier. The first video tries to capture your attention desperately by including a song that may inflict some sort of deep message into it, it takes the value of the pictures completely out. The message of the second video is to actually inspire to make your own video, it basically ravages you with words indicating that, it is intended to make you think about the current world conflict.

There were some really important "chunks" to the video, some bad or some good, they made the video what it is. On the first video, the chunks of the trash can, bombing and a guy on jail. I really liked this part, this part shows you the real world, it shows you that no country is perfect but rather plagued by some wrong. On the second video, the part when there is a quick and noticeable change in ethnicity, people working in several places, was a really key element to this "trailer", it truly transmits the message. This parts were key since they really show you the world as a whole, and immense planet. I can't wait to decide the approach I am going to take towards this activity, although a I really don't have good hopes of making a very good video.

Fuel Efficiency and the BP disaster

This year, one more time humanity has been shown the dangers of dependance on crude oil, with the help of the BP disaster on the Gulf of Mexico. Fuel efficiency, the smart decision to make, has been around for a while now, but the industrial mongers keep repressing their importance to the environment. Although some cars, like the hybrid, have escaped this oppression and had come out for sale, and actually has been sold quite a while, there is still much to do about this subject. I do consider the smart decision when I get into my car, that's why I walk to school, why waste money, and in the process actually cooperating in the environmental movement for the good of the planet. I should as well as any person consider this fact while thinking of getting into any gas-based vehicle, there were animals killed in the BP incident, people lost their jobs, all because of the constant demand for an overused type of fuel. In conclusion, the use of fuel efficient vehicles is good, it is good 0n your wallet and for the environment, just a small step in the environmental movement that has finally been alive these last years.

Distance/Fuel Measurement Chart

So, for the past two days we have been working on finding out how much gasoline we use to get to school, by computing data like distance betwenn house and school, fuel usage by car, etc. This project in particular has been quite complex for some, but rather easy for myself, as I live near the school. I found out I only use 23 liters per year with my car to get here, and on my dream car an Audi R8, I would use 26 liters to get to school a year. The fact that I use so little gasoline to get here, makes up for the fact that I rather walk to school. The fact that I walk to school is a good form of exercise, and perhaps the only, since I have quite my running routine a while ago.

Google Earth Tours

Today on computer class we viewed our peers Google Earth tours, which was a mixed experience. The first tour was Ximena's tour, it only had to places, her house and Miami, those two destinations seemed interesting. However, there were four locations, and Miami was mispelled as Mami, it also showed from a far distance some islands whose name I can't recall, the whole tour was supposedly erased as a mistake, but still it was ok. The second tour was Mahonry's, it actually only had his house for 35 seconds with a rotating camera. The problem was exactly that, it was also another tecnical issue, such a shame, I actually saw the original last week and it was pretty cool. The third and last tour was Raul's, his tour was complete and included places such as Disneyland and New York, which are two totally awesome places. The only criticism I could add would be reduce probably by a few seconds each destination, but it was overall a great piece of work. In conclusion, this activity had a lot of cassualties thanks to tecnical issues, so it would be a mixed experience.

JOY Post

J:This past summer was quite exciting. I bought Starcraft 2, which I am still playing 'till this day, I actually played the first game twelve years ago. The game requires quite a lot of ability and requires the player to actually have a brain. The original game actually turned into an actual professional sport on Korea, where the best players are from. The game helped me remind the old times as well as reactivate my brain from the vacation period. Apart from the game, I actually started running in my afternoons to get in a better shape(yes, I am not joking). I discovered running was quite challenging, I ran all over Marina, about 5km in 30 minutes for like two weeks up until I got back to school; I am quite busy now. I still run on the weekend as it became sort of like a hobby, I actually really enjoyed these vacations.

O: In these rather incredibly stressful times of school work there is one thing I would love to do, sleep. I actually sleep an average six hours a day which is about two hours less of the eight I should sleep. What happened really was that during the past vacations I started to sleep really late on the nights, I'm talking 3-5 a.m. This is truly the reason why I am so tired at school, but there is one thing I never had and will do, fall asleep on class. For the past 3 years or so I have slept for a little time and yet I have done alright in my grades, I actually love learning as nerdy as it sounds. So I will try to get some more sleeping time as it really doesn't affect me to sleep some more time, or does it? I can handle stress pretty good and I have found that waking up early gave me advantages like: more time to study, chill and listen to some music and arrive early to school. With this said, I would still try to get some more sleep.

Y: I have never liked to be part of the average person, that's why I don't consider myself average. You may call it nerdy or pure weirdness but I have very unique tastes. I personally like learning new stuff a lot more than just going out of my house to party. I don't like parties, it is actually a recently "acquired" taste, but I don't like parties. I like video games, but I also hate that people start classifying me as a nerd, though I really don't bother hitting them back. I believe that physical defense is quite natural to any animal, including humans, so I do have a fuse, a very long one. I have played video games for over twelve years now and I still love them just like then. So with the previous comments stated, this is why I am different from the other people.

8th Grade Typing Tracker year

During this eight grade, I have, for the first time, used Typing Master. On computer class, we were assigned to record the test results for the whole test result. I have come a long way since scoring a 6 on the test to a 33, it was quite a bumpy road. I have definitely improved on my scored throughout the year. This is mainly for starting to use good coordination between eyes and fingers, not looking at the keyboard that much. Practicing this tecnique gave me a huge advantage and helped me improve my grades. I do feel as typing should be still practiced during the next school year, the ninth grade. I also feel as I can improve my typing speed, typing fast and accurately could be quite useful on the future; specially on this ever changing times. So, I would definitely like including typing tests on the next year. In the end, I got a good speed, but I still think I can do much better.

This graph has proven to be a relatively good tool to show my grade growth. It is good to the basic level. This graph indicates the growth for MAP reading test taken over this eight grade.

This graph is not so useful to show the grade growth of this schoolyear. I think it should be used to indicate the increase in sales of a company with regards to several product. This graph shows the grade growth of the MAP language tests taken oer the this eight grade.

This graph is useful to indicate my grade growth in the MAP tests of this school year. It is quite useful because it indicated grade by test specifically. This graph indicates the grade growth of MAP math tests taken over this eight grade.

The best possible graph that could be used to display the grade growth would be the third, because it is specific on every test, this allowing you to see the growth with much more ease than the other two graphs.

BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Since April the twentieth up to this day, there has been a constant oil leak on the Gulf of Mexico. It was caused by a wellhead blowout and it also took a ship by putting it on fire, there were fifteen+ deaths caused by the fire and enormous environmental damage. The oil leak is now damaging unmeasurable amounts of wildlife. It is foreseen that the leak will damage the fishing industries and tourism on the Gulf as well as the environmental damage. The responsible for this disaster is BP, or british petroleum, and will pay the relatively little amount of 7.5 billion dollars. The company won't really suffer from this loss since they make a lot more than that in revenue. Also, BP will remain having its huge income level, know why?, we as the greatly advanced human race haven't figured out what other fuel to use besides petroleum.

The fact that injustices like this happen are extremely unfair for the affected, all the wildlife, birds and fish. The fact of the matter is that to add insult to the injury, BP had planned to cap the leak, however are already foreseeing failure, even before doing it. Many ideas have arose and yet BP has made an excuse to avoid those ideas. Some good ideas that aren't being used in all the affected areas are the use of hay, dishwasher, hair and a brilliant idea of an all naturally made absorbent of oil that repels water, invented by a colombian inventor. I personally think that the idea of the all natural absorbent and dishwasher are going to work, and even better, they're cheap. This disaster has been one of the worst in history and the bad thing is that it is still leaking. Maybe now, that we're seeing how much harm can be done with the use of petroleum, we will concentrate at figuring out alternatives to petroleum. Many advances in the search of an alternative have been made, the use of solar energy, gas created from cane, etc. In conclusion, this disaster is forcing us to find a environmental-friendly fuel to prevent atrocities like this to ever happen again.

Edit 06/06/10: Cap has been places and it is reportedly picking up 6,000 gallons a day, it is expected for the cap to start picking up 10,000 + gallons on the next week.

MAP TEST...again

Last Week the entire high school had to do MAP testing, it was quite annoying. On the fall we also had a MAP testing week, it was quite the same deal. Computer class was replaced with sports or something, also some classes were replace by health and it was overall an annoying experience. I wouldn't change anything about the testing process because it had its benefits, take missing computer class, it was fun. I was happy with my scores since they were almost the same as last times, but still I could analyze the questions to get a better grade. The free spirit day thing was clearly not a motivation for doing good at the tests, I did it because I want to enhance my knowledge. In conclusing this MAP testing thing was boring, but neccesary.
